Die Stadt Lilongwe ist die größte Stadt und die Hauptstadt von Malawi. Die Stadt liegt im zentralen Teil des Landes und wurde deshalb 1974 gewählt, um Zomba zu ersetzen, das bis dahin die Hauptstadt war. Die Stadt liegt am Ufer des Lilongwe-Flusses, in der Nähe der Grenze zu Mosambik und Sambia. In der Stadt finden wir zwei sehr unterschiedliche Bereiche: Auf der einen Seite die Altstadt, die voller Geschäfte und Märkte ist und als der authentischere und weniger entwickelte Teil gilt. Auf der anderen Seite die Neustadt, in der sich der Regierungssitz, verschiedene Botschaften und große Supermärkte befinden.
