Day 2: Arenal: Sloth Tour
Today, you will take part in one of La Fortuna’s most beloved nature experiences: a guided sloth observation walk designed to spotlight these gentle, slow-moving mammals in their natural habitat. This guided excursion takes place along well-maintained trails that weave through a combination of secondary forest, botanical corridors, and reforested areas, ecosystems that naturally attract sloths thanks to the abundance of Cecropia trees, guarumo plants, and other vegetation they feed on.
The experience begins with a brief introduction to the area’s ecosystems, where you will learn why the region surrounding Arenal is such a favorable environment for sloths. Naturalist guides, trained to identify subtle movement and coloration in the canopy, will lead the group at a relaxed pace, making frequent stops to point out wildlife. With patience and a sharp eye, you may be able to spot both species of sloths found in Costa Rica: Two-Toed Sloth (Choloepus hoffmanni) and Three-Toed Sloth (Bradypus variegatus). The trail is rich in tropical wildlife, and encounters with a remarkable variety of species are common along the way, including toucans, tanagers, motmots, and honeycreepers, as well as frogs, reptiles such as basilisks, iguanas, and anoles, and an abundance of insects and butterflies. Occasional sightings of coatis, agoutis, and other small mammals further enhance the experience. After this tour, return to the hotel with the remainder of the afternoon free to enjoy the thermal waters, relax, or explore the culinary and cultural offerings of La Fortuna.Overnight in Arenal.
Day 3: Arenal – Monteverde
After breakfast, travel from Arenal to Monteverde on a unique journey that combines both land and water for an unforgettable transfer. Begin with a scenic drive to the shores of Arenal Lake, where you’ll board a comfortable motorboat for a picturesque one-hour ride across Costa Rica’s largest lake. As you glide over the tranquil waters, take in breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains, rolling hills, and the imposing Arenal Volcano, standing majestically in the background. This route is not only the most efficient way to connect these two destinations but also the most beautiful, making your transfer part of the adventure itself. Once you reach the opposite shore, ground transportation will be waiting to take you into the lush, cloud-covered forests of Monteverde, where misty landscapes and rich biodiversity await.
In the evening, you will enjoy a fascinating guided night walk, one of the most authentic and immersive ways to experience Monteverde. As daylight fades, the forest awakens, offering a completely different perspective on the ecosystem. Your naturalist guide will lead you along forest trails, using specialized lights to help you spot the creatures that become active after sunset. During the walk, you may observe kinkajous, playful nocturnal mammals that move swiftly through the treetops in search of fruit and nectar; sleeping birds, resting peacefully on low branches, offering rare close-up sightings; tree frogs and amphibians, often found near moist leaves and vegetation; bioluminescent insects, glowing softly in the dark forest; armadillos, coatis, and other night-active mammals, quietly foraging along the forest floor.Overnight in Monteverde.
