この都市は、1221年2月4日にウラジミールのユーリー2世によって設立されました。 1612年、クジマ・ミーニンとドミトリー・ポジャースキー王子は、モスクワをポーランドから解放するための軍隊を組織しました。 1817年にニジニノヴゴロドはロシア帝国の偉大な貿易の中心地になりました。 1896年の見本市で、全ロシア展が開催されました。ソビエト時代、この都市は重要な産業の中心地になりました。特に、この時期にゴーキー自動車工場が建設されました。その後、街には「ロシアのデトロイト」というニックネームが付けられました。第二次世界大戦中、ゴーキーは東部戦線への軍事装備の最大の提供者になりました。このため、ドイツ空軍は絶えず空から街を爆撃しました。ドイツの爆弾の大部分はゴーキー自動車工場のエリアに落ちました。工場のほぼすべての生産現場が完全に破壊されましたが、ゴーキーの市民は100日後に工場を再建しました。
