Salto Uruguay

Salto, formerly known as Salto Oriental, is the capital city of the department of Salto, Uruguay. It is located 498 km from the city of Montevideo (along routes 1 and 3) on the eastern bank of the Uruguay River, in front of the Argentine city of Concordia, with which it has a strong historical link, and there is a road and rail connection through the Salto Grande dam. This city is called Salto because, before the Salto Grande dam was built, the Uruguay river formed an extensive waterfall (called Ytú, in Guaraní) as a result of the outcrop of rocks in its bed. The city center is located about 18 km (per route) to the south of the Salto Grande dam and the reservoir that forms it. National Route 3 is the main communication route between Salto and the rest of the country. Salto International Airport is located 3 km south of the city.
