Mérida ist die größte Stadt und Hauptstadt des Bundesstaates Yucatán, aber auch das Kultur-und Finanzzentrum dieser Region. Es handelt sich um eine moderne und kosmopolitische Stadt, mit Museen, Kunstgalerien, Restaurants, Geschäften und Boutiquen. Darüber hinaus spielt die Stadt eine bedeutende Rolle bei den Studien des Vermächtnisses der Maya- Indianer. Mérida wurde im Jahr 1542 von Francisco de Montejo, genannt „El Mozo“ an der Stelle der antiken Maya-Stadt T’ho (Stadt der fünf Hügel) gegründet. T’ho war zu seiner Zeit der kulturelle Knotenpunkt und das Zentrum der Aktivitäten der Maya-Bevölkerung in der Region Yucatán. Nach Ankunft der Spanier wurden die fünf Pyramiden der antiken Stadt zerstört und die Überreste zum Bau der Kathedrale von Mérida und anderen wichtigen Gebäuden benutzt.
