Gelegen in einem dramatischen Tal, das vom Fluss Douro durchzogen wird, ist Porto bekannt für die Schönheit seiner Gebäude und den süßen Geschmack seines Weins. Das Zentrum der Stadt ist die Avenida dos Aliados, eine breite Allee, die von der Praça General H. Delgado und der Praça da Liberdade umgeben ist. Dennoch ist der reizvollste Teil der Stadt Ribeira, das Flussviertel und ein UNESCO-Weltkulturerbe, wo drei der anmutigsten Brücken Europas die Schlucht überspannen. Die belebte Praça da Liberdade und die angrenzende Avenida dos Aliados bilden das Stadtzentrum, wo Statuen in der Mitte der belebten Mosaikwege stehen. In der Nähe erhebt sich die große Kathedrale von Porto, eine kolossale, befestigte romanische Struktur, deren schwere Granitfundamente, dicke Wände und winzige Fenster ein düsteres Inneres umschließen. Die Ribeira erstreckt sich entlang des Flusses, gesäumt von einer wunderbaren Uferpromenade mit Geschäften und Restaurants. Portos charakteristischstes Denkmal, der prächtige Torre dos Clérigos, bietet von seinen 240 Stufen aus ein Panorama der Stadt. Kein Besuch in Porto wäre vollständig ohne einen Stopp in einigen der vielen Bodegas, Weinkellereien, in denen Portwein gelagert und abgefüllt wird. Und ein Besuch in der erstaunlichen Lello-Bibliothek mit ihrer Wendeltreppe ist ebenfalls ein Muss, selbst wenn man kein Harry-Potter-Fan ist.
